So many of us are just confused with all these medical like lingo which is so easily flying around us.
Actually, they could make the whole thing easy for you and me, but no, they have to create smart looking lingo and confuse the whole population. Naturally, all those terms are needed for the scientists and doctors and the like, but in this little article I will explain in plain English what the most common on them mean.
cardio - same as aerobics in the gym, same as running or anything that usually makes you sweat :) oh, and usually you are out of breath!
fats - are the stuff everyone wants to get rid off except our own body. This is the "storage" our body uses to put extra things away to. So when you give your body too much food, the extra bit gets put in this "storage" and its a pain to get rid of it :)
carbs or carbohydrates - this is everything that is sweet (like candy or cakes) or everything that is made from white flour (like bread or pasta). As a general rule all the white stuff is bad and the more brown or darker colours of the same foods are healthier.
proteins - your supermen! no joking, proteins are the building blocks of life. The more of these we have the better. These guys give us stronger muscles, nice skin as well as youth! And they never ever do damage to us. Where can you find them? Protein shakes, chicken breasts, egg whites, fish and other foods.
calories - this is how much energy you will get by eating something or how much energy you will burn by doing an exercise.
fat % (percent) - is something a lot of websites will have you calculate, which you should not bother doing. This is the proportion of your body that is basically made of fat. A good looking body person will have this around 13% or so. I suggest to find this number either from your doctor, either from a scale that you can buy in the shop or just by looking at yourself in the mirror :)
BMI or the body mass index - is another measure for monitoring purposes to tell you where you are in terms of weight. A regular person doesn't need to know this. Basically, its the same as the fat % above.
water % (percent) - is how much water there is in your body. A good healthy body will have this around 70% and an overweight person will have it lower than 50%. As you lose fat, the water takes its place, so drink your water every day and never go thirsty! Again, this is a statistic that you don't really need to have, just drink daily the 8 big glasses.
So there you have it. Next time you go shopping, have a look at the table on the package that you pickup in the supermarket and you will see there calories and grams or % of fat, carbs and protein. Try to make sure the protein number is the highest and the other three as low as you can have them. (try compare say regular cheese with the light version of the same brand or even more easy, compare coke with coke light/diet).
